Theater Down South

The local theater scene has always been identified with venues in the big cities such as Makati, Pasay and Quezon City. For residents of the South Metro area, this has made theater going something of an ordeal. The thought of having to navigate the SLEX and contend with the traffic is enough to put many people off the idea of watching a live show. Fortunately, there is now a more accessible alternative.
Theater Down South is a theater company dedicated to providing quality productions for residents of Parañaque, Alabang, Las Piñas and points further down (such as Cavite, Laguna, etc.), with a special focus on educational and family entertainment. It also features performers who are based in the South Metro area. With most of their shows being mounted at the Insular Life Theater, Alabang, the company hopes to foster a theater going habit among the communities in the are, and promote theater as an alternative form of entertainment, bringing great live shows closer to home.

Previous productions have included “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Treasure Island” and “Rapunzel”. This season, the company adds two musicals to their repertoire. In August, they will be staging “The Princess and the Red Carp”, an original musical based on the Chinese version of the Cinderella story, and in September, Theater Down South will be doing Stephen Sondheim’s “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. Veteran stage actor Michael Williams, who is also the company’s Artistic Director, directs both shows. There are also plans to restage “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” later in the season.

To further build their audience, Theater Down South is also heavily involved in activities that promote theater education. Aside from holding acting workshops during the summer months, the company offers their services to schools needing help in mounting theatrical productions. They also hold special performances geared specifically toward schools, which contain an additional educational component.
As the South Metro continues to expand, Theater Down South hopes to grow alongside it, providing entertainment, education and a thriving theater scene in the area for years to come.
