The Road to Cannes

The Philippines boasts of sun-kissed shores and balmy clime, but its natural treasure lies in its talented people.  In recent years, a long line of illustrious Philippine citizens have stepped on the world stage, and shone under the limelight, grabbing glory for the country, for each of their countrymen to share – indeed, bask in.

We are all familiar with Manny Pacquiao, Efren Peñaflorida and Lea Salonga, who have all glorified the Philippine flag in sports, education and the arts, respectively.  They are but a few from a million Filipino heroes around the world.

The world of international cinema honors the best the world has to offer through the Cannes Film Festival, the prestige and honor of winning the award is not so known to majority of our countrymen.   The Cannes Film Festival has bestowed two Filipinos with awards.

Ten years ago, Raymond Red won the festival’s Palm d’Or for the movie “Anino”.  In 2009, Brillante Mendoza won Best Director for “Kinatay”.  Red and Mendoza are from the advertising industry - Red is a commercial director, and Mendoza was a production designer.  Both are scriptwriters, cinematographers and directors.

What is not common knowledge is the globally-renowned Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival held every year at the Palais des Festivals in the postcard-perfect scenery of the South of France.  Considered the only global convergence of professionals in integrated communications, the Cannes Lions is an annual event that features seminars and workshops, exhibits and screenings of the best work, the latest trends, the most innovative ideas, as well as the industry experts and globally-renowned practitioners of the trade.

The Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival will be held from June 20 to 26, at the Palais des Festivals.  Philippine advertising agencies send entries of released work for competition in a number of categories, and since 2005 4As-Creative Guild holds a competition in search of young Philippine creatives to compete in Cannes Young Lions, among other international advertising events.  The Cannes Young Lions is an on-site competition.

The Young Lions competitions are for the up-and-coming advertising creatives and marketers to compete with their global counterparts in an intensive match of artistry and wit.  Young Lions Creatives are 28 years old and below, while Young Lions Marketers are 30 years old and below.  The Young Lions competitions require teams to produce work within 24 hours of the project brief.

As the Philippine representative to the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, Pepito Olarte, Group Sales Director of the Inquirer Group of Companies, organizes the Philippine contingent to the annual festival.

Time is of the Essence

Time management is not only a need to make your time worthwhile at work. Time management is also needed to spend with your offsprings. True, that nowadays, it's also necessary that both parents are working to sustain the family for this is the major investment that no one can ignore. It's really hard to be a working parent. I also believe that time should also be worthwhile especially when it comes to our children. After all, everything the child learns starts at their homes. Time can still be on your side if one is good a managing time. If one can do it at work, you can still do at home. We are living a liminal existence meaning our time is limited. If we don't maximize our time we have with our kids, it easily passes by. You may missed those "photographic moments " that you may not only taken in camera but in memory.

Last Sunday, an expo for mothers was held at Rockwell Tent(Expo Mom). Mom Blogger, Jen Tan and celebrity mom/actress Dimples Romana-Ahmee suggested some tips for time management during their Mommy Talk portion.

Maximizing time with your kids will not make you a "superparent" your kids need but teaching them the value of time management will they learn that time is the best we give and cherish. Kids Watch Central suggests this fun wristwatches for kids so they can learn to value time.

These watches comes with different designs with their favorite cartoon characters from Disney and Cartoon Network. Kids Watch Central is located inside Children's Accessories area in leading department stores such as SM, Landmark, and Rustan's.

Raisa An Active Baby with Pampers

Pampers distinguishes itself as a leading brand in disposable diapers. Pampers itself is becoming like a generic name for diapers because people knows that Pampers is surely a quality diaper for babies. Through the years, Pampers made innovations in diapers to make sure that our babies are comfortable wearing them without having grown rashes or irritations.

For the knowledge of those who are not yet parents like me, diaper rash is a result of skin irritation due to moisture in the nappy area caused by pH changes that occur when stools and urine combine. Keeping the baby's bottom dry and clean, are the best ways to prevent a rash. Make you you change the baby's diaper after they become wet or soiled.

During the Expo Mom last Sunday, People at Pampers demonstrated that Pampers can absorb the wetness even at the amount of pressure. You may never know. When a baby is playful and accidently fall on it's bun, usually leaks will overflow from the diaper. But with Pampers, they are assured that the diapers will absorb the flow of the baby without having rashes because of the thin layer with zinc oxide cream and petroleum jelly. The Pampers experts also advise not to secure the diaper tightly for comfort and to allow air.

This proves that Pampers is the best diapers in the market when it comes to dryness. Pampers also makes sure that they are the right diaper for an ACTIVE BABY with it's extra locking layer that seals away wetness so it stays dry even under pressure. It has soft,cotton-like outer cover with a great breathability and hypoallergenic lotion with aloe vera.

I examined this for myself and saw the difference when compared to an ordinary diaper. Pampers Active Baby is available in major supermarkets nationwide. For more information, visit www.pampers.ph

Rico Blanco Sings Bosing Ako

FILIPINO ENTREPRENEURS NOW have their own theme song thanks to the collaboration of Pinoy music legends Rico Blanco and Arnel Pineda.

The song, “Para sa mga Bossing” serves as an anthem for entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs—it’s a call for them to continue striving for success, to gather courage and to take control of their destiny.

The anthem has been recorded and released, giving voice to the aspirations and accomplishments of Filipino SMEs (small-to-medium scale entrepreneurs)...

“PLDT-SME Nation is happy that our vision for Filipino entrepreneurs is being shared so enthusiastically, and with such dedication, by Rico Blanco and Arnel Pineda. We’re happy that the talents of Rico and Arnel are able to help our advocacy and inspire entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs in a powerful way,” says Kat Luna-Abelarde, PLDT vice-president and head of PLDT SME-Nation.

Both Rico and Arnel are committed to using their incredible talents in the service of Filipinos. Rico has previously recorded songs meant to serve a good cause—like the song he released to raise money for Ondoy victims, for example—while Arnel has established his own foundation to help the less fortunate, especially street children.

Powerful Message

The “Para sa mga Bossing” anthem goes: “Ang asenso maaabot/Sa bagsik nitong prinsipyo/Ang talino’t pagsisikap/Ibubuhos sa negosyo/Bossing ako/Aking tagumpay/Sa ‘kin nakasalalay…”

“The difference between success and failure is really attitude. Filipinos need to become more hopeful and more optimistic; to dream big and make that dream come true. In “Bossing” we are sending out the message that by becoming entrepreneurs, Filipinos can rise above poverty or any other obstacle. By becoming entrepreneurs, they can be the boss of their business and of their destiny,” says Rico.

International rock singer Arnel Pineda, who is now the vocalist of world superband Journey, also says the recording of “Para sa mga Bossing” is very meaningful for him: it reminds him of his own struggles to succeed despite tremendous odds.

“There was I time when I was broke and living on the streets—but I struggled to change for the better. You have to think of yourself as in control, you have to have the attitude of a boss, a bossing, so you can succeed. I know what it’s like to start from the very bottom. To rise above your circumstances, you have to keep hoping, keep striving and have the guts to fulfill your dreams and ambitions,” adds Arnel.

Advocacy

“SMEs form the backbone of the Philippine economy, generating more than 90% of income. More SMEs mean more jobs, more income and more purchasing power. Filipino entrepreneurship is a key to creating a strong economy for the country.

“That’s why PLDT-SME Nation is doing all it can to provide cost-effective, high-tech, fast, and reliable business solutions to our SMEs. In today’s age of high-tech, global communications, PLDT-SME Nation is there to provide SMEs a competitive edge, to help them grow, thrive and succeed,” Luna-Abelarde explains.

“Para sa mga Bossing” is already playing across the airwaves with its message of hope, courage and determination--so that even more Filipinos will strive to be the Boss of their own businesses and be the Boss of a brighter future up ahead.

Bossing Ako

PLDT-SME Nation is going all out in serving the nation’s small-and-medium entrepreneurs (SME) through its massive campaign that aims to ignite Pinoy ingenuity for business with “Bossing Ako.” The “Bossing Ako’ campaign aims to encourage more Filipinos to strive to become their own boss by becoming entrepreneurs.

It also seeks to inspire Filipino small-to-medium scale entrepreneurs to continue striving for success and courageously meet the challenges of growing their business.

“We are on a nationwide campaign to encourage a new generation of Filipino entrepreneurs. The Philippines needs more entrepreneurs in order to ensure our economic future. Today, about 90 percent of income in the Philippine economy is generated by SMEs. As we move forward into the 21st century, we’ll need more SMEs to provide more jobs, more income and more purchasing power,” says PLDT-SME Nation Vice President and Head Kat Luna-Abelarde.

The nationwide campaign was kicked off with the launch of the song “Para sa mga Bossing” performed by OPM rock music icon Rico Blanco collaborating with Journey lead vocalist Arnel Pineda. The song’s release introduces a new anthem and rallying cry for Filipino entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs-to-be: “Ang asenso maaabot/Sa bagsik nitong prinsipyo/Ang talino’t pagsisikap/Ibubuhos sa negosyo/Bossing ako/Aking tagumpay/Sa ‘kin nakasalalay…”

SME ambassadors

Apart from the launch of the “Para sa mga Bossing” anthem, PLDT-SME Nation has a parallel effort that focuses on icons of Pinoy entrepreneurship. This effort focuses on the success stories of these SME icons—to provide models, inspiration and even wisdom to SMEs and help them succeed just as well.

These SME icons are designated as “Pinoy Bossings” and include: Mother Lily Monteverde of Regal Films for starting from SME into a pillar of the Filipino film industry; Jay Aldeguer of Island Souvenirs for promoting his passion and love for the country through his tourism souvenirs business; Joey Concepcion, entrepreneurship advocate and Founding Trustee of Go Negosyo; and PLDT Chair Manny V. Pangilinan as the ultimate bossing.

Also representing the ‘Bossing Ako’ movement are Les Reyes of Reyes HairCutters, Gardy Cruz of Pancit Malabon Express; Raphael and Jenni Soon of North Park, Ronald Pineda of Folded & Hung; Benjamin Liuson of The Generics Pharmacy, Darius and Carlos Hizon of Pampanga’s Best; Louie Gutierrez and Dulzzi Gutierrez of Silverworks; and Vicki Belo and Cristalle Henares as the mother-daughter tandem for beauty and medical practice.

“The entrepreneurs we tapped for this campaign are all great examples of SMEs that others could look up to for inspiration. The selection is both diverse and of top-notch quality, representing various business industries in their success stories,” says PLDT-SME Nation Marketing Head Amil Azurin.

With preparations on-hand in wrapping up the first phase of the campaign with the release of the song and the unveiling of the 12 SME ambassadors, a big launch is set to take off by mid-June; followed by a grand celebration of the “MVP Bossing Ako Awards Night,” named in honor of PLDT’s Chair Manny V. Pangilinan by October in partnership with Go Negosyo.

SM Hypermarket opens 20th branch

An all new experience with a touch of the familiar is happening this side of the metropolis.  SM Hypermarket North Harbour is now open, revitalizing shopping in the world’s most densely populated area.

SM Hypermarket North Harbour will be serving approximately a million consumers in the bustling neighborhood of Manila, Navotas and Caloocan, providing them with a holistic shopping experience where most shopping needs are satisfied all in one go.

More choices of goods and services
Consumers are given more choices with a variety of merchandise and other convenient services which are distinctly SM.

SM Hypermarket North Harbour has its own ‘modern wet market’ with its Fresh section where the same variety of selection in a wet market is offered but with more shopping conveniences – air-conditioned place, clean aisles and precise weighing scales.

Shoppers can also find toys, apparel, appliances, home furniture, and techie gadgets. Moreover, for medicines, home repair, or money transfer, they can go to Watson’s, Ace Hardware, or Western Union.

Consumers can also settle bills, exchange foreign money, and even take home roast chicken from the Rotisserie nook and fresh bread from the bakery stand.

They are also given novel alternatives through the affordable house brand SM Bonus, with over one thousand items to choose from, and the takal-takal section which enables consumers to pick the ingredients they want at preferred and affordable quantities.

Moreover, caterers and carinderia owners can get their supplies of meats, sauces, condiments and other ingredients found in the Big Packs area at very affordable prices.

For sure, consumers will get what they deserve at SM Hypermarket North Harbour – excellent customer service at all times. They will also experience luxury of space and a wide array of choices which are both essential to delivering shopping convenience.

Employment for locals, community outreach

When SM Hypermarket North Harbour opened, employment opportunities for the community were created.  Local talents were tapped to build their career in SM – one of the biggest conglomerates in the Philippines.

Also, SM Hypermarket gives small and medium enterprises (SMEs) a chance to showcase their products during the weekend bazaar as it allocates a certain area for SMEs to display and sell their products.

In effect, SM Hypermarket is now a community concept, reaching out to nearby barangays through various events and programs such as cooking demonstrations, songfests, and dance contests. This year, SM Hypermarket will be turned into a community store, not just a place to shop, but a place that shoppers can call home.

This transformation happens as SM Hypermarket invests in people and business partners by providing jobs for the locals and business opportunities for SMEs in the community.

More in store for consumers

SM Hypermarket North Harbour is the 20th branch of SM Hypermarket in Metro Manila and nearby provinces like Rizal, Cavite, Pampanga, and Pangasinan. More stores will be opened this year to bring the SM shopping experience closer to more Filipinos nationwide.

Since it started operations in 2001, SM Hypermarket has been successful in creating the convenience of having a first-rate indoor wet market and a food and general merchandise store. It also continually introduces new concepts to enhance and reinvigorate the consumers’ shopping experience.

Food For The Skin

New research suggests that wine grapes really do have beauty-boosting properties. Here, a look at some of the science and its applications.

GRAPESEEDS
Benefits: Research suggests polyphenols—antioxidant-packed compounds in grapeseeds—can fight the aging effects of sunlight and pollution. Crushed grapeseeds act as an exfoliant.

Products and Uses: Face creams made with grapeseeds can help keep skin looking young; grapeseed massage oils may improve circulation; grapeseed scrubs and cleansers exfoliate.

GRAPEVINES
Benefits: Resveratrol, found in grapevines, protects them from fungus. Research shows that when applied to skin, it can stimulate cell renewal. Viniferine, a polyphenol in vines, may lessen skin discoloration.

Products and Uses: In 2004, vinotherapy company Caudalie patented a vine-stalk extract made from viniferine. It's the key ingredient in the brand's Radiance Serum.

GRAPE SKINS AND STEMS
Benefits: Antioxidant-rich polyphenols are abundant in grape skins and stems. A grape-skin, stem and seed mixture called marc—a by-product of winemaking—helps slough away dead skin.

Products and Uses: Bubble baths and lotions made with grape skins and stems, along with other essential oils, can be effective in cleansing, nourishing and moisturizing skin.

I recently discovered GrapeBella’s head-to-toe range of premier skin products targets your whole skin from top to toe for a complete, effective regimen. It's currently being distributed by Watsons. I love GrapeBella's exfoliating body polish is a body scrub with wine extract and tiny apricot seeds that gently exfoliates skin to prevent visible signs of aging. Watsons GrapeBella moisturising shower cream maintains moisture balance to keep skin soft and smooth. Watsons GrapeBella revitalizing shower gel is an invigorating cleansing gel with grape extracts to keep skin refreshed while Watsons GrapeBella softening body lotion keeps skin hydrated and moisturized all day long. Watsons GrapeBella nourishing hand and nail cream contains keratin to keep nails strong while moisturizing hands and nails on the go. Watsons GrapeBella Lip treatment lip balm has vitamin E and jojoba oil to lock in moisture.

SM Advantage cardholders and BDO Rewards members get a 20% discount with every Watsons GrapeBella purchase. For a limited time, each Watsons GrapeBella product comes with the gift of Everything Italian with Watsons GrapeBella Privileges for discounts at Italian bars and restaurants like The White Hat, Browhaus, Caruso Ristorante Italiano (Café Caruso), Joey Pepperoni, Buenisimo, Ralph’s, Barcino, Sicilian Express, Il Pirata, and other wonderful establishments like Strip, My Lash, Segara Villas and many more.
